Every year, the Environmental Working Group releases two lists:
1.) the Dirty Dozen, which is a trademark term, is used to define the list of fruit and veg that contain the most pesticide residue in their skins. Ideally, these fruit and veg should be bought organic but at the very least, should be soaked before consuming in order to remove as much of the the harmful pesticide residue as possible. Buying organic varieties of these crops also means you’ll be avoiding genetically modified produce.
2.) the Clean 15, also a trademark term, is then the exact opposite :-). These are the fruit and veg with the least harmful pesticides. Although theoretically, these can be consumed without washing first, they should be rinsed so as to remove harmful bacteria from handling. Buying organic varieties of these crops also means you’ll be avoiding genetically modified produce.
