Are you aware of a parallel system to the movement of blood around the body called the lymphatic system?
This intricate system moves fluid and toxins from the tissues of the body in order to flush them out through urine and stool. This is especially important for the gut which is understood in Functional Medicine to be the inflammatory set-point of the body and where 70% of our immunity lies. To ensure its optimal functioning, the digestive system needs to detoxify and has an enormous web of lymph vessels to support its detoxification function.
The lymphatic system, made up in part by lymph nodes and vessels, runs alongside the circulatory system. Unlike the blood vessels with their valves and the heart working to pump blood through the cardiovascular system, lymphatic vessels do not have their own valves or pump/s to carry lymph and toxins out the body. The lymphatic system relies on movement of the body to keep it healthy, flowing and functioning well.
When circulation is compromised (obesity, diabetes, extreme stress, fluid retention etc), the lymphatic system can become stagnant. We can easily and effectively stimulate the lymphatic drainage system and facilitate the movement of toxins out the body with simple DIY’s…
Exercise and movement go without saying! the following DIY’s are super effective…
re-bounding, hot baths, sauna… and of course, dry skin brushing.
Dry skin brushing is a simple yet very effective way to support the body’s natural ‘house cleaning’ mechanism, the lymphatic drainage system. The best time to dry brush is today, right before a bath or shower. All you need is a soft-bristled brush, preferably with a long handle in order to reach all parts of the body.
Brushing is done directly to the skin and always in the direction of the heart. It should only take about five minutes and has the added benefit of exfoliating the skin.
Dry brushing has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years…
Now, today is the time for you to DRY BRUSH for the first time, and to continue this effective ritual for a lifetime of great detoxing!
