Build Immunity against Corona Virus

Prepare your body to beat COVID-19

The new Delta strain of corona virus is shockingly aggressive, and much more infectious.

Missing from our country’s leadership, and in fact from global leadership, is the powerful narrative of building immunity through lifestyle, including nutritious food and appropriate supplementation to ensure availability of all the vitamins and minerals our bodies require.

The message: Get your body prepared!!

Micronutrient deficiencies (vitamins and minerals) lower our immunity and our bodies defence mechanisms, and increase the risk of getting ill (or worse) from a corona virus infection. So yes, the operative word is ‘preparation’ in ensuring your immunity is as good as it should/could be, especially if you have underlying disease/s, or you are over 60.

the ‘Prepare’ protocol:

1.) Optimise gut health

2.) Eat well to ensure optimal micronutrient sufficiency

3.) Stay hydrated

4.) Breathe

5.) Supplement, orally and with IV vitamin drips

6.) Get sufficient  daily exercise

7.) Sleep 7-8 hours per night

8.) Take immediate action in addressing those underlying conditions…they significantly increase your predisposition to getting really ill from a corona virus infection.

Quercetin

Quercetin, a naturally occurring dietary flavonoid, is well known to improve chronic diseases and the ageing processes in humans. It’s antiviral properties have been investigated in numerous studies. Studies have demonstrated that quercetin can interfere with various stages of the coronavirus entry and replication cycle. There is evidence that quercetin, in combination with vitamins C and D, has a synergistic antiviral action that may provide additional therapeutic/preventive benefits due to the overlapping antiviral and immune-modulatory properties. The well documented antiviral significance of quercetin offers a possible strategy for the effective utilization of natural polyphenols in our daily diet for the prevention of viral infections.

  • Preventive dose: 500mg twice daily
  • From day 1 of infection: 500mg twice daily
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 has recently been highlighted as a key player in the strength of our immune systems, especially when it comes to fighting off viral infections. In a 2020 study, researchers examined the average vitamin D levels among populations from 20 European countries as well as the documented cases of COVID-19 and the subsequent mortality rates from the virus. They found a correlation between lower vitamin D levels and higher incidence of COVID-19 risk and mortality. These studies suggest that both screening for vitamin D deficiency and possibly using it as a supplementary treatment could play an important role in pandemic-related public health. As a fat soluble vitamin, it is best to take Vitamin D with fat containing foods, like a nut butter. Ti improve its absorption and effectiveness, Vitamin D3 should also be taken in combination with Vitamin K2.

  • Preventive dose: 5000 iu per day
  • From day 1 of infection: 12 000 iu per day
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Vitamin K2

A newly published paper highlights the association between K2 and recovery rates in individuals with COVID-19.

Studies are indicating a poor K2 status in COVID-19 patients, with increased risk of mortality from co-morbidities including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

This supports an earlier study published in April 2020 revealing a link between vitamin K2 deficiency and disease severity.

Evidence continues to mount that Vitamin K2’s mechanism of action has a considerable impact on protecting human health

Deficiency of Vitamin K2 also results in less elasticity of connective tissue, including lung tissue as well as blood vessels.

A dietary supplement is not a cure or a treatment, but over time, K2 can fortify the body’s resilience to age-related conditions and viral infection.

  • Preventive dose: 200mg per day
  • From day 1 of infection: 250mg per day (with 12 000 iu Vitamin D3)
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has long since been known to boost the body’s immunity. Many international studies are now proving that high dose Vitamin C taken orally or by IV can halt the onset of severe COVID-19 symptoms. It is now also well documented and understood that the critical phase of COVID-19 is as a direct result of an inflammatory reaction by the body’s immune system, similar to sepsis.

Studies are proving that early suppression and rapid resolution of symptoms, as shown in cold studies giving 4-8 g of Vitamin C in the first 24 hours of infection, has the potential to stop conversion to critical COVID, thus taking the pressure off the National Health Service.

Global campaign makes plea for vitamin C and COVID-19

An international consortium of vitamin C advocates wants regulators to bring vitamin C into the therapeutic bag of measures in the battle against COVID-19.  HTTPS://WWW.NUTRAINGREDIENTS.COM/ARTICLE/2020/12/17/GLOBAL-CAMPAIGN-MAKES-PLEA-FOR-VITAMIN-C-AND-COV

  • Preventive dose: 1000 mg twice daily
  • From day 1 of infection: 2000 mg 3 x per day
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Zinc

Zinc is important to a healthy immune system. It’s a mineral that’s been touted to fight colds and upper respiratory infections. Taking zinc within 24 hours of the first signs of a cold can shorten the duration of a cold. It can also help make symptoms less severe. Zinc helps fight infections by boosting the production of antibodies against infections. Now, new research suggests this powerful nutrient may play a role in Covid-19 outcomes.

A deficiency of zinc can increase your risk of infections. In past studies, the WHO reported that zinc deficiency may be responsible for 13% of all lower respiratory tract infections. Researchers from Spain reporting at a European coronavirus conference found that hospitalized Covid-19 patients with low blood levels of Zinc tended to fare worse than those with healthier levels

Zinc deficiency is common in the elderly, who are most likely to be severely affected by coronavirus. Researchers think that zinc deficiency may be one of the reasons seniors are more susceptible to infections. No doubt that adequate zinc is essential for seniors because of the consequences of even mild zinc deficiency on the immune system.

  • Preventive dose: 20mg twice daily
  • From day 1 of infection: 20mg taken 5 x daily (100mg per day)
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Melatonin

The therapeutic potential of melatonin as a chronobiotic cytoprotective nutrient to counteract the consequences of COVID-19 infections has been advocated. Because of its wide-ranging effects as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory compound, melatonin could be unique in impairing the consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Furthermore, indirect evidence points out to a possible antiviral action of melatonin by interfering with SARS-CoV-2/angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 association.

As a cytoprotector (cellular), melatonin serves to combat several co-morbidities such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and ischemic and non-ischemic cardiovascular diseases, which aggravate COVID-19 disease.

A script is needed for melatonin as it is now scheduled. Contact your health practitioner.

  • Preventive dose: 3 mg at night for higher risk individuals
  • From day 1 of infection: 3 mg at night for higher risk individuals
  • Always consult your physician before starting a vitamin regimen

Fermented Food

Organic Green Tea Kombucha is a fermented food and an effective probiotic in restoring and maintaining healthy gut bacteria. It strengthens the immune system with anti-oxidants and boosts energy with enzymes and B vitamins. It also detoxifies with gluconic acid and probiotics

It is well documented that 70% of our immunity resides in our gut. Leaky gut and/or dysbiosis of the gut microbiome result in lowered immunity.

20 – 30 different fruit and vegetables a week as well as a variety of fermented foods in our diet will ensure a healthy and robust gut microbiome. (healthy gut bacteria)

  • Preventive dose: 50ml in the morning, on an empty stomach, increasing weekly
  • From day 1 of infection: 50ml in the morning, on an empty stomach, increasing weekly

L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is an amino acid that is considered to be the most important nutrient for the healing of leaky gut syndrome. It is the preferred fuel for enterocytes and colonocytes that line the gut wall. Low levels of serum L-Glutamine correlate with intestinal barrier disruption, inflammation and diarrheal diseases, all of which compromise immunity.

  • Preventive dose: 1 tsp at night, dissolved in warm filtered water
  • From day 1 of infection: 1 tsp at night, dissolved in warm filtered water
